named for Senator George Hunt Pendleton, a prominent Democratic leader
from Ohio.
Pendleton is famous
for the Woolen Mills, Underground Railroad, and Pendleton Round-up.
Pendleton is
on the Oregon Trail.
Pendleton is
located in northeast Oregon with almost equal distances to Portland,
Oregon, Seattle and Spokane, Washington, and Boise, Idaho. Pendleton is
on I-84 and U.S. Highway 395.
Pendleton is famous for its roundup. The Pendleton Roundup is held in
the second full week of September. It is the USA's best rodeo.
Established in 1909, the celebration includes an old-fashioned rodeo,
cowboy breakfasts, parades, a big name country music concert, dances,
art shows, and a nightly Happy Canyon Pageant that details the history
of Native Americans and pioneers of the area. This town of around 15,000
people swells to 55,000 during this four day event.
The
Roundup is held in conjunction with the Happy Canyon Pageant, the
Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation's largest powwow.
